The first three days of having braces mark a time where your body will be getting used to having the appliances in your mouth. You may feel some slight discomfort as your body becomes accustomed to braces. These great tips will help make these days a little less awkward and a lot more comfortable.

Warm salt water

If you are experiencing some soreness, rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help soothe your mouth and provide a little relief.

Cut food into small pieces

Meal times with braces become a whole lot more manageable if you cut your food into smaller pieces. Cutting your food into smaller pieces limits the amount of time your cheeks rub up against your braces. As an added bonus, it’ll also limit broken brackets as well! If you are feeling particularly tender, some great foods you can eat during this time include:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Oats
  • Smoothies
  • Soup
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Lasagne


Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is always beneficial; however, it is also important during the first few days of having braces. Drinking lots of water helps keep moisture and saliva in your mouth. This extra moisture keeps your braces from hurting your cheeks.

Orthodontic wax

Brackets and wires can rub against your teeth, tongue and lips. Your orthodontist will likely provide you with some orthodontic wax. A small ball of this wax pressed over the area of your braces that is causing irritation can help provide some relief.
