Malocclusion is a misalignment of teeth or incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dental arches, patient F had a malocclusion more commonly referred to as ‘buck teeth’. At Dream Smiles Orthodontics in Sunnybank and Morningside we helped treat patient F’s teeth to reduce the look of buck teeth and her other problem alignment areas.
This case saw our patient F treated for a 2.0 mm space in between the upper central incisors and an overbite so deep it totally covered up the lower incisors (incisors are the front teeth in your mouth).
Treating patient F’s buck teeth was the main objective for this treatment. Patient F was warned that when all the spaces were closed, her buck teeth may disappear sufficiently to render the removal of upper premolar teeth unnecessary. Removing a tooth anytime is easy, re-planting a tooth is near impossible which is why it was so important to let the treatment progress before deciding to extract any teeth.
It is evident from this case study that patient F’s treatment was successful. While many cases are clear cut in terms of extraction, often there is a broad grey zone in the middle, which can make it difficult to judge whether extraction is necessary. In such cases, we believe I starting the treatment as usual and make extraction solutions only if it is the final straw. Removing a tooth anytime is easy, re-planting a tooth is near impossible, which is why extraction must be considered only as a final solution. At Dream Smiles Orthodontics we start the treatment without any extraction and assess the case as the treatment progresses.
