Orthodontic braces are the best solution to ensure you can enjoy a healthy, straight smile for life.
Because no smile is the same, traditional braces are individualised for each person. Braces are a mixture of brackets and wires fixed to the front of your teeth, which work by putting gentle pressure on your teeth and moving them gradually into the correct position.
As braces have become less bulky and visible in recent years, more and more adults are wearing them, for a variety of reasons. Teeth and jaws not aligned properly can lead to premature wear and tear, advanced tooth decay and gum disease. All of which can pose serious concerns to your health.
Adults are increasingly turning to braces to correct:
- Gaps between teeth (spacing)
- Teeth that push against one another (crowding)
- Crooked teeth
- Overbites
- Under bites
- Cross bites
Are metal braces better than ceramic braces?
The right orthodontic treatment for you will depend on what sort of treatment you need. For complex cases, metal braces are often the best method because they provide the most support and give your orthodontist the greatest ability to straighten your teeth.
Metal braces are the tried and true teeth straightening method. Worn by patients of all ages, this treatment is reliable and does not require an element of compliance that aligners do. Ceramic braces can stain easily but metal braces don’t have this problem.
Ceramic braces are ideal for people who need mild to moderate work done, and would prefer their braces didn’t stand out as much.
Metal braces for adults
20% of orthodontic patients in Australia (and America) are adults. Having teeth straightened has never been easier, and access to a specialist is more common than it was 10 or 15 years ago. While some adults will opt for Invisalign, lingual braces, or clear braces, many require serious orthodontic work. Which often can’t be done with these discreet treatments.
Thankfully, metal braces are not as large and bulky as they once were. Metal braces are used for adults who don’t mind the small amount of metal on their teeth and who want proven, reliable results.
Are metal braces better than Invisalign?
No. And yes. Metal braces are more effective at straightening severely crooked teeth than Invisalign, and Invisalign does require you to put your aligners in for 22 hours each day. Also, you must brush your teeth after every meal before you put the aligners back. And if you don’t wear your aligners often enough you may not get the results you were expecting.
Metal braces don’t come off until you have completed treatment. This means that you’re more likely to achieve your desired outcome in the prescribed time, and don’t have to worry about losing aligners.
